I usually breq to handle this by using the amsmath package and using the split structure. It doesn't occur for every dgroup, and if I switch back to the align environment everything works fine. The breqn package, besides breaking equations, has the habit of breaking also other packages. I suspect that the [compact] option that you loaded with breqn is important for this, but I'm not sure why I cannot reproduce your results.
